Q1. Explain any two of the excerpts of poems given
below with reference to their context:
(i) Now, sire”, quod
she, “When we flee fro the bemes
For Goddess love, as
taak som laxative.
Up peril of my soule
and o lif,
I counseille yow the
beeste, I wol nat lye,
The lines you've
shared seem to be from Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales,"
specifically from the Wife of Bath's Prologue. In this passage, the Wife of
Bath is advising her audience, particularly men, to take her advice seriously,
for the sake of their souls and lives.
The phrase "flee fro the bemes" refers to avoiding the dangers or hardships of marriage, which the Wife of Bath sees as akin to fleeing from a fire ("bemes" is an old word for "beams," which could symbolize the heat or danger of a fire).
When she says,
"For Goddess love, as taak som laxative," she's essentially urging
men to listen to her advice out of reverence for God's love, and perhaps
suggesting that they should lighten their stubbornness or resistance to her
counsel ("taak som laxative" could be metaphorical for loosening up
and being receptive).
The Wife of
Bath then emphasizes the seriousness of her advice, stating that she's speaking
